This year Congress, the major Canadian academic conference, is taking place in Montreal at McGill University. Black Rose Books, Montreal’s radical English-language publisher since 1969, would like to welcome locals and visiting scholars alike to a series of alternative events (and parties!) aiming to look at this year’s Congress theme, ‘sustaining shared futures’, from a more radical perspective. Learn about the work of local Montreal organizations fighting for a democratic future, hear from important thinkers in the field of social ecology and the history of social struggle, and of course, join us for live music, drinks and socializing.
Friday June 14th: Workshops and presentations by local organizations fighting for a democratic economy, dignity for working people, and green futures worth living in. Find out what’s being done in Montreal by groups like the Milton Parc Citizens’ Committee - the McGill TA union (CSN-FNEEQ) - Première Ligne - Justice Climatique Mtl and more. Co-op Bar Milton Parc, 7pm. Free/PWYC.
Saturday June 15th: SEIZE has carried out an ambitious survey of housing groups across Canada in order to identify points of consensus and debate around policy, action and organizing. Join us as the results of the survey are shared for the first time and discussed along with local housing organizations SLAM and Prenons la Ville. Co-op Bar Milton Parc, 7pm. Free/PWYC.
Sunday June 16th: A full day of events starting with the citizens' inauguration of Lucia Kowaluk Park, a new park named in honour of tireless campaigner for justice, the late Lucia Kowaluk. Will include speakers, live music (Norman Nawrocki, Chorale du Peiple, Ouzo Power) and a picnic. Southeast corner of du Parc and des Pins, 10am. Free/PWYC.
The citizens' inauguration will be followed by Black Rose Books author talks and the book launch of our forthcoming title Bread and Stone by Allan Weiss, a gripping novel set amidst the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike. Speakers will include Prof. Marie Josee Lavalee and Prof. Andras Gollner. Wine and cheese. Co-op Bar Milton Parc, 3pm. Free/PWYC.
At the end of the day we will be having a party in the park, with more music, dancing, and socializing! Lucia Kowaluk Park, du Parc and des Pins, 8pm. Free/PWYC.
