Scenes of the Occupation from Gaza / Scènes de l'occupation à Gaza (1973) – Court-métrage documentaire (13 minutes)
The Game / Le Jeu (1973) – Court-métrage de fiction (16 minutes)
Up to The South / Montons au Sud (1993) – Long-métrage documentaire (60 minutes)

We're excited to announce that we will be co-hosting, with Regards Palestiniens and Feminist Media Studio, a screening of three Palestinian films that expose the realities of the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the Palestinian struggle for liberation before the 2000s :
Scenes of the Occupation from Gaza (1973) - Short Documentary (13 mins)
A rare film by the legendary filmmaker Mustafa Abu Ali, one of the founders of the Palestine Film Unit, the first filmic arm of the Palestinian revolution. Shot by a French news team, the footage was edited by Mustafa in Lebanon to produce one of the earliest films on the occupied territory in Gaza.
The Game (1973) - Short Fiction (16 mins)
“The game they play is the game of war itself ” writes filmmaker and scholar Qais Zubeidi. In 1973, Shirak directed this short film in which the games of Palestinian children increasingly merge with warfare. Remnants of combat, such as bullets and tanks, are the toys of a group of young boys. When one of them finds a casing of a bombshell, their band disperses into a haunting game of hide
and seek.
and seek.
Up to The South (1993) - Feature Documentary (60 mins)
A powerful documentary that examines the current conditions, politics, and economics of South Lebanon. It examines the issues behind those conditions and their representation both in the West and in Lebanon itself. Within this we were trying to tackle two other concerns. One being the terms (and positions) inherent in the discourse surrounding the issues, i.e. terrorism, colonialism, occupation, resistance, collaboration, experts, spokespeople, leadership, the land, etc., and the other being the history and structure of the documentary genre specifically in regards to the representation of other cultures by the West in documentary, ethnography and anthropological practise and the problems/agenda involved from the perspective of the subjects viewed and the practitioners practising. Up to the South challenges traditional documentary formats by positing representation itself as a politicized practice.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with a member of Regards Palestinians.
