The BJP has led India towards fascism on a program based on populism and neoliberalism. As India goes to the polls in 2024, how do we understand the rise of right-wing supremacist politics in “the world’s largest democracy” today? The BJP, the ruling party in its second term, is the political wing of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), which is one the oldest fascist movements in the world. From pre-independence India to the present day, this group, alongside its various affiliates, have espoused far-right Hindu nationalism, Hindutva, and the formation of a Hindu Rashtra (polity) – designed to exclude Muslim, Dalit, Sikh and Christian communities. In this presentation, we trace the history of this movement, its beginnings in colonial India, to its involvement in the assassination of Gandhi, and its growth and transformation in the later decades, inspired by tactics in fascist Italy and settler colonial/Zionist Israel.
We will discuss how the larger political and economic factors, like populism and neo-liberalisation in the 1980-90s, enabled the rise of this far right to mainstream federal politics. We will elaborate on how the legislative, executive and judicial parts of the governance of the country have largely been compromised in the absence of a critical mainstream media. This is complemented by a prolific increase of Hindutva organizations and subsequent activity in countries such as the UK, the United States and Canada. We will also demonstrate why the situation in India has alarming relevance to the rest of the world. We also look at ways in which people are opposing these groups in various socio-political spaces: in our communities here and in India.
