BOG TO VOTE ON REVISING TIMELINE TO RECONSIDER DIVESTMENT
Divestment is back on the agendas of the Board of Governors!
Thanks to tireless student organizing, the BoG may vote on divestment two years earlier than planned.
In 2019-2020, the Board rejected divestment and chose a greenwashing "decarbonization" strategy instead, and closed the question for five years so that divestment could not even be brought up until 2025.
On Thursday, April 20th, the Board of Governors will be voting on reopening the question of divestment, expediting the timeline for reconsideration. If this vote passes, divestment could be voted on again as early as this fall; if not, the question will stay closed until 2025, which - as the recent IPCC report shows - is far, far too late.
McGill is one of the last major universities in Canada to declare a commitment for divestment. This is embarrassing for our institution. McGill must divest completely and immediately, and reinvest into our community!
The rally at 3:35 will be followed by the ** ONE MINUTE SCREAAAM!! ** at 4:20pm - come join us to scream your support for the Board to reconsider divestment, for a food secure campus, and to let out all your finals stress. https://www.facebook.com/events/1412992166134855
Following our event, we encourage you to check out this book launch hosted by Climate Justice Montreal, who will also be speaking at our rally! https://fb.me/e/2yMCseFgw
Our rally and scream will take place on occupied and unceded Kanien'kehá:ka territory, known as Tio'tià:ke in Kanien'kéha and Mooniyang in Anishinaabemowin. As you scream outside the Board of Governors meeting, please channel your anger at the fact that James McGill was an enslaver of Black and Indigenous people, that McGill was saved from bankruptcy by theft from the Six Nations Trust Fund, and that McGill is still in court trying to dispossess Kanien'kehá:ka land from the Kahnistensera, the Mohawk Mothers.
