This workshop is a collaboration between a clown performer & teacher and a dramatherapist. We wish to foster development of resilience and skills for anxiety by harnessing the creative potential of clown.
WHAT IS DRAMATHERAPY?
Dramatherapy is an active therapeutic and experiential approach that uses theatre for personal and social development. Through creative exercises, improvisation and creation, participants can discover new parts of themselves, enhance interpersonal relationships and develop spontaneity.
WHAT IS CLOWNING?
Clowning is a theatrical discipline that uses play, connection and physical expression. Through humour and exaggeration of truth, clowns break rules and boldly embrace their own flaws.
This workshop will explore :
- Humour as a tool for honesty, vulnerability and connection
- Using the wisdom of our bodies for improvisation and connecting with our impulses
- Attunement to and acceptance of oneself
- Seeing and being seen
- Embracing failure through play and games
- Welcoming chaos as a source of creation
Your teachers:
Daphne Morin, creative arts therapist (MA) :
Trained as a dramatherapist and performer, Daphne has been involved in different community-based theatre projects using theatre for social change. Her techniques are inspired by playback, physical and therapeutic theatre to explore the interstices of lived experiences in an embodied way. She has worked in various settings (clinical, educational and community services) using theatre for well-being with children and youth living in precarious situations and/or struggling with trauma. Her training as a clown has led her to social circus where she is currently the youth program leader for Cirkaskina, Cirque Hors Piste’s national component. Daphne's approach is resilience-based and aims to explore our relationship to the human condition using creative tools.
Ander Gates, clown and drag queen:
Ander took his first clown course in Vancouver in 2012, an experience that lead to much personal growth and inspiration. Being quite shy at the time, getting onstage was terrifying, but he felt motivated to continue to develop the skill. A few years later, he moved to Montreal and began focusing on performance, continuing to study clowning and dance, and perform as a drag queen and clown. He continues to perform around town in his two personas: Dot Dot Dot and Meander.
Ander also teaches clown, sassy dance, and drag. He strives to create a non-judgmental space for people to move their bodies, express themselves, and play in community. Ander believes that in clown our weirdness and quirks become our super-powers. We deeply embrace ourselves, and in doing so, make space for others to do the same.
