This Republic Day of India, let us gather to recall that 73 years ago, India adopted a Constitution that secured all its citizens JUSTICE, social, economic and political; LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship among other rights.
Today, houses and mosques are bulldozed citing the most nonsensical excuses, hundreds of human rights defenders, journalists, lawyers, student leaders, activists have not only been denied freedom of expression, but are detained without trial. Freedom of press is close to non-existent, and more recently, the Modi Government has sent in ‘Legal Requests’ to social media sites like Twitter to remove tweets, the most recent being after the launch of the BBC documentary series that identifies Modi’s role in the 2002 Gujarat Massacre.
The attacks and violence on religious minorities in India, in particular Muslims, are escalating to a terrifying crescendo. Aside from legislative disenfranchisement of Muslims through laws like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), as well as various laws against trade in beef, inter-faith relationships, and “conversion,” there is the almost daily mob violence, including lynchings, by social vigilantes unchecked by the state or under state watch. Ministers and other elected officials of provincial and federal governments and prominent Hindu religious leaders are openly seen giving speeches inciting armed violence against Muslims.
The recent amendments of the Constitution and various Acts reflect the fascist bias of this government. The legal and administrative institutions including the judiciary have also been politicized, turning often on those who have been targeted by the government..
As the world is watching India and Hindutva fascism, we reaffirm our resolve and support for secular democracy, pluralism, and human rights in India as set out in its Constitution.
When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.
