- What is the role of science in anti-capitalist and anti-colonial struggles?
- How should radicals relate to the production of scientific knowledge under capitalism?
- How can scientists and friends of science fight back collectively against an exploitative system that alienates us from one another?
Join us for a book launch and discussion with two of the authors on the possibilities of radical science and labour organizing within STEM.
These talks will be run both in person (snacks and coffee will be provided) and virtual. Please indicate whether you're attending virtually or in person when choosing the ticket.
All are welcome-- this event is for anyone interested in radical visions of science and society (you do not need to be a scientist!).
About the book:
Organize the Lab: Today, science is a billion-dollar enterprise operating through governments, universities, and industries. But like every other productive activity under capitalism, it would not exist without scientists’ labor. Recent waves of unionization campaigns have shown us that the only way to overcome precarity and oppression is through collective action. In this collection of essays, written by and for student workers, union organizers, and radical scientists within academic STEM, we share strategies for building power through labor organizing, and discuss alternative visions of science.
About the publisher:
Science for the People (SftP) is a radical community organization that first emerged in 1969 from the anti-war movement in the US. It aimed to develop a theory and practice of science both by and for the people, in opposition to a science directed by corporate greed and imperialism. It was revitalized in 2015 and publishes a magazine that covers topics ranging from extractivism, Marx and ecology, and anti-imperialist frameworks for combating the climate crisis.
SftP Canada is building a network of radical scientists (and friends of science), both inside and outside of establishment institutions, who seek to learn and work in the anti-capitalist tradition, comprising feminist, anti-imperialist, and anti-racist class struggles. Our network enables us to share our scientific knowledge, make sense of our experiences collectively, develop anti-capitalist analyses, and put radical theory into practice. SftP Canada firmly believes in doing science for, by, and with the people, which means we are deeply committed to the extension and democratization of scientific theory and practice beyond the walls of traditional institutions, and developing a practice of science, technology, and medicine that serves social needs.
