"The Sin City Gala : Une collecte de fonds ".
_____

You are cordially invited to a very special night: "The Sin City Gala: A Fundraiser "
_____
This event seeks to gather funds for the services ASTTeQ offers to trans people living on the margins and to uncover the vibrant history of the Red Light District and how crucial it has been for local trans communities. In the post-war era, Tiohti:ake / Montreal was nick-named the "Sin City" of the North as people from all over the world would come, specifically to the Red Light District, to indulge in activities that were forbidden elsewhere.
The intersection of the Saint-Laurent boulevard and Sainte-Catherine street were the heart of a world of spectacle and sexual freedom, as it hosted numerous nightclubs that would attract visitors to be seduced by beautiful cabaret and burlesque shows that were often performed by trans artists.
Unfortunately, due to moralizing campaigns by certain politicians such as Jean Drapeau, this district has been erased one building at a time, but its name remains on our map.
Cafe Cleopatre is one of the last surviving pieces of this vibrant part of history as it bravely sued the city and greedy developers to stay alive. This gala aims to honour its resilience, as well as the many trans artists that have and continue to fearlessly grace its stage.

We acknowledge that the place in which we will gather is situated within the traditional unceded lands of the Kanien'keha:ka (Mohawk) peoples, part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Tio'tia:ke, or Montreal, has also long been, and continues to be, a gathering place for many First Peoples from all directions. We honour and thank the traditional custodians of this land and strive to work for the success of future generations.
Unfortunately this event will be located on the second floor of a very old building which is hard to access by wheelchair. We are very sorry for this unfair inconvenience.
