This Wednesday, October 26th, will mark a historic moment. The Kahnistensera, the Mohawk Mothers, have brought McGill and the Société Québécoise des infrastructures to court over their refusal to permit a proper investigation of the Royal Victoria Hospital site for unmarked mass graves of Indigenous children experimented on during the MK-Ultra experiments at the adjacent Allan Memorial Institute in the 1950s-60s. McGill and the SQI have begun excavation on the site despite testimonials of these graves and despite this ongoing court case.
On Wednesday, the colonial courts may grant an injunction for construction on the Royal Vic site, rendering further excavation impossible for a brief period, or refuse it and continue a long pattern of allowing corporate colonial interests to override those of the Indigenous people who have long stewarded this land. Regardless of the outcome, this date represents a beginning of much further work to be done both within the courts and without to recognize and realize Indigenous sovereignty.
We will be holding a public rally starting in the morning at the Montréal Courthouse to demonstrate our support for the Kahnistensera and the imperative of the courts to uphold Indigenous sovereignty.
Follow our social media and linktr.ee/studentsagainstnewvic to find out about our events leading up to this rally, including a teach-in lunch on campus on Monday and a movie screening of Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance on Tuesday.
These events will all be taking place on unceded Kanien'kehà:ka territory, known as Tio'tià:ke in Kanien'ké:ha and Mooniyang in Anishinaabemowin. We must not forget that McGill was created from the dispossession of Kanien'kehà:ka land and wealth and the labour of enslaved Black and Indigenous people. The struggle against the New Vic is a unique and crucial moment to act towards Indigenous sovereignty and land back in a much more concrete way that mere land acknowledgments.
