Short documentaries from here and abroad that explore queer identity, masturbation, the rage that we feel at times, and the story of a Canadian woman who was jailed for falling in love with a Chinese man in 1939. An important, yet forgotten, part of our history.
INCORRIGIBLE – A FILM ABOUT VELMA DEMERSON Karin Louise Lee | Canada | 45 min | anglais / English En présence de la réalisatrice | With filmmaker in attendance
Want to hear an unbelievable story? Let us tell you Velma’s. In 1939 Velma Demerson was jailed for falling in love with a Chinese man. Pregnant and without legal counsel, Velma was sentenced to one year in a Toronto prison where she was tortured by a eugenicist doctor who attempted to abort her child. 60 years later she sued the Canadian government for wrongful incarceration, and until her death at age 98 in May 2019, continued to fight for the rights of the thousands of women imprisoned on the grounds of “incorrigibility” until 1964. In order to share Velma’s extraordinary trials, Gemini Award-winning director Karin Lee has made a documentary film about her life.

LA BOUILLORE (THE KETTLE) Héloïse Bargain | Canada | 4 min | français avec sous-titres anglais / French with English subtitles
*CW: récit de viol / detailed account of rape
// Because rage is also important. In a visual letter to her rapist, a young woman describes the horrors she would like to inflict on him. Authenticity and violence reverse the victim-culprit relationship in this autobiographical work.

When the global Covid-19 pandemic breaks out and South Africa goes into hard lockdown, some of the worst affected members of society are migrants and refugees, who are ineligible for government assistance. But here comes Nyasha, a lesbian migrant from Zimbabwe, who sets up a relief network for the members of her fellow LGBTQIA+ migrant community, a group they proudly call their family.
