HOUSE OF BARBARA AND TAKING WHAT WE NEED PRESENT:
MOTHER ELLE BARBARA'S AIDS VOGUE BALL 2022
****7000$ IN CASH PRIZES ****
****FREE OUTDOOR EVENT ****
****FREE OUTDOOR EVENT ****
The storming of the 5th International AIDS Conference held in Montreal in June 1989 brought some of the work and demands of people living with HIV and AIDS to the front and center of the political agenda, as hundreds of people broke through security and took the microphone from then Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Until then, the conference was a members-only event, mainly catered for the AIDS establishment, and the narrative power, in the hands of outlets who framed the story based on "abstractions" presented by power players of the medical-industrial complex.
More often than not, the particular experiences and struggles of people living with HIV/AIDS get left out of the conversation; something activists in the late 1980s were quick to denounce, due to the insurmountable silencing and gaslighting they were facing. Still today, not enough focus is put towards Black and Indigenous community outreach, thus resuting in a lot of ignorance and misinformation about HIV in those communities. Unlike other sexually transmitted illnesses, people living with HIV can still be convicted of serious criminal offences for not disclosing their HIV status, even when there is no risk of transmission.
Elle Barbara and House of Barbara in collaboration with Ballroom 4 Community & ASTTeQ present a Ball to commemorate the watershed events of 1989.

OTA PERFORMANCE - 1 TROPHY / $2000
In June 1989, Montreal hosted the Fifth International AIDS Conference. The event was made for scientists, politicians and other professionals. Groups of people living with HIV had not been invited while fear and frustration around HIV/AIDS had reached a fever pitch. About 300 people stormed the Palais des Congrès (where the conference was held), broke through security and took the stage and kept the mic from then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, thus declaring the AIDS conference open on behalf of People Living with AIDS in Canada and beyond.
Bring it as enraged protester in a late 80s inspired look and eat the floor with the same fire that pushed our ancestors to take up the space they were deprived of on June 4, 1989.
OTA BIZARRE - 1 TROPHY / $1000
HIV is for the most part transmitted via unprotected sex and by sharing drug injection equipment. On the other hand, harm reduction is a realistic approach seeking to reduce the harms associated with sex and/or substance use, without requiring people to abstain.
Bring it as a used harm reduction object, whether it’s for drug use or safer sex!
OTA SEX SIREN - 1 TROPHY / $1000
In the mid 80s, 6 friends (later calling themselves Gran Fury) seeking a visual shorthand to express their anger at the government's silence around AIDS came up with the "Silence=Death" slogan and artwork. The poster was later adopted by ACT UP in New York, Montreal & beyond.
Bring sexy back with duct tape covering your mouth to denounce the silence that persists around HIV to this day. Note that you must be oily to walk this category.
MF/FF REALNESS - 2 TROPHIES / $1000
(BATTLE FOR CASH: GP 700$ / RUNNER UP 300$)
(BATTLE FOR CASH: GP 700$ / RUNNER UP 300$)
People living with HIV can be convicted of serious criminal offences and sent to prison for not disclosing their HIV status, even when there is little to no risk of transmission. In fact, HIV criminalization undermines effective public health initiatives like HIV testing, creates a false sense of security among people, and increases the stigma and discrimination affecting people who live with HIV.
Bring it as a cis-het ally picketing outside Parliament Hill in Ottawa to denounce the criminalization of people living with HIV in Canada! Have a placard and read sitting Canadian lawmakers to filth!
(FF = FEMALE FIGURE = FEM QUEEN & DRAGS REALNESS)
(MF = MALE FIGURE = BUTCH QUEEN, TRANSMEN & BUTCHES)
OTA BODY - 1 TROPHY / $500
By 1987, the pink triangle was used as a symbol in the "Silence=Death" campaign launched by ACT UP (a prominent AIDS advocacy group). Today that same iconic logo remains synonymous with HIV and AIDS activism.
Bring it to the judges using only pink triangle pieces to cover the parts of your body you need to hide.
OTA RUNWAY - 1 TROPHY / $500
Up until the watershed day of June 1989 that shook the Fifth International AIDS Organization to its core, the conference was strictly for the AIDS establishment.
Bring it as one of the scientists attending the conference and be sure your walk is fiercely arrogant with an elitist attitude.
OTA LABELS - 1 TROPHY / $500
Imagine that you are a top fashion model at one of today's top avant-garde spring/summer collector fashion fairs.
Bring the house down with a contemporary look in homage to the ACT UP, AIDS Action Now! and Réaction-SIDA activists who justly claimed a seat at the table in the summer of 89! Be sure to include at least three (3) label pieces in your fashion-forward attire, should you be inquired on the designs you're wearing!
OTA FACE - 1 TROPHY / $500
In sales like in politics, you know how the saying goes: there's always more than meets the eye...
Bring it dressed as a top pharmaceutical executive or as a politician trying hard to seduce the press. Avoid flashy colours, bold makeup, or for that matter anything that'd betray your white-collar image.
