Alliances and Decolonial Research: Meeting with the Kahnistensera
(Mohawk Mothers), Anishinabe activist Waba Moko and Jen Gobby of

(Mohawk Mothers), Anishinabe activist Waba Moko and Jen Gobby of
Research for the Frontlines
This event will bring together Kanien'kehákas and Anishinabe Indigenous activists to share their current struggles, as well as the Research for the Frontlines collective, which supports both communities in their research efforts from a decolonial and activist perspective.
The Kahnistensera (Mohawk Mothers) have initiated legal action to demand the return of their ancestral lands on Tekanontake (Mount Royal) and to block a real estate project to renovate the former Royal Vic and the McGill Department of Psychiatry to investigate the potential presence of unmarked graves of victims of the MK-Ultra mind control program in the 1950s and 1960s.
Activist Waba Moko will share her Anishnabe community's struggle to identify and protect the original populations on their land and maintain
their traditional way of life, as well as their efforts to establish the Anishinabe Odinewin Language and Culture Camp to restore Anishinaabe language, culture, teachings and ceremonies. In Anishinaabemowin, Odinewin refers to language, teachings, ceremonies and a way of life. Since 2019, the camp has been held at various locations throughout the Ottawa River watershed, the territory of the Odishkwagamè Anishnabeg (people of the lakes and rivers). Anishnabe Odinewin is an autonomous Aboriginal initiative that operates without institutional funding. All donations can help restore the Anishnabe language and culture, including the construction of a permanent community center on Anishnabe territory located in the La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve.

Research for the Frontlines is a collective of researchers and students who have been involved in both the Kahnistensera's and the Anishinabes' struggles to defend their territories from colonial incursions. Concordia University-based researcher Jen Gobby will share the collective's methods and the paths that are open for activist research that concretely advances the cause of decolonization.
