Detailed information:
Panel 1: The Forgotten Revolutions: Budapest 1919 & Black Ukraine 1917-21 (2pm-3pm)
Chaired by the Founder of Black Rose Books, Dimitrios Roussopoulos, this panel will celebrate the rights of workers to govern themselves directly and to build their own houses from the ground up without a self-appointed vanguard telling them how to go about it. The three panellists will echo the battle cry of the Zapatista rebel Subcomandante Marcos — as well as Hungary’s Ilona Duczynska, who in 1917 lit the fuse of the Budapest Commune at the age of 20: We “Shit On All The Revolutionary Vanguards of this Planet”! (From Subcomandante Marcos's "letter to the Basque liberation movement ETA").
The discussion will kick off with Concordia University Politics Professor Emeritus and civil rights activist, András B. Göllner, who will talk aboutThe Forgotten Revolution, which raises the curtain on one of the greatest cover-ups of the past century in world history regarding the struggle of the oppressed for justice, constitutionally guaranteed equal rights and ecologically sustainable communal well-being. Göllner’s partner on the panel, Sean David Patterson, is a PhD Candidate at the University of Alberta. Patterson will discuss his research for his forthcoming book on an even earlier effort in Ukraine to avoid the pitfalls of the Bolshevik’s recipe — which, as Rosa Luxemburg and many others had warned, would lead to a series of disasters, illustrated by what transpired later under the Soviet Empire between 1918 and 1990, and in China to this day under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. This panel will try to provide some answers to the question: what is to be done against the serial killers, the perpetrators of the affinity-fraud who derive their power and wealth in the digital age, by destroying the ability of working people to distinguish fact from fiction, illusion from reality.
Panel 2: Confronting Canada's Past: Imperialism, Colonialism, and Racism (3:15pm-4:45pm)
"Canada's own Noam Chomsky", as he's often called, Yves Engler will present a history of the Canadian military from the perspective of its victims. Laurentians-based historian Joseph Graham will compare European historical accounts and Indigenous stories of contact in the Americas to illustrate the wide cultural chasm that separated the two civilizations. Concordia Professor Nalini Mohabir will talk about one of the most significant black student protests in North American history and grapples with the legacies of this watershed moment in light of current resistance movements.
After speakers present on their own work and research, they will engage in a discussion moderated by Black Rose's own Clara-Swan Kennedy. Weaving together their insights, the discussion will create an honest tapestry that cuts through the propagandist narratives about our history, which are so prevalent in Canadian society. Q&A will follow.
*The Cité-des-Hospitalières building is an accessible space upon demand. Please advise us of any special access needs you have and we'll be sure to guarantee smooth access to our event.

Panel 1: The Forgotten Revolutions: Budapest 1919 & Black Ukraine 1917-21 (2pm-3pm)
The Forgotten Revolution: The 1919 Hungarian Republic of Councils edited by András B. Göllner“Black Ukraine: 1917-1921” a presentation by Sean Patterson
Panel 2: Confronting Canada’s Past: Imperialism, Colonialism, and Racism (3:15pm-4:45pm)
Stand on Guard for Whom? A People’s History of the Canadian Military by Yves EnglerInsatiable Hunger: Colonial Encounters in Context by Joseph GrahamThe Fire That Time: Transnational Black Radicalism and the Sir George Williams Occupation edited by Nalini Mohabir and Ronald Cummings
