A wave of divestment wins has been sweeping universities across Turtle Island.
On September 10th, Harvard University announced divestment of its $42 billion endowment from fossil fuels after a decade of campaigning by students and alumni at Fossil Fuel Divest Harvard, including a massive disruption of the Harvard-Yale football game in 2019 and a recent legal case launched against the University. The campaign is now implementing a "listening tour" in order to see how communities want divested funds to be reinvested.
On October 27th, the University of Toronto also announced divestment after nearly a, decade of campaigning spanning at least three campaigns including Toronto 350 (established 2012), Leap UofT (est. 2016), and Divestment and Beyond UofT (est. 2019).
And most recently, on November 1st, Simon Fraser University committed to full divestment after 8 years of campaigning including by SFU 350, who announced their intention to start a hunger strike just days before the University announced divestment. SFU 350 is now shifting toward democratizing the university starting with reforming the Board of Governors.
These wins follow victories from the University of British Columbia, Lakehead University, the University of Guelph, the University of Waterloo, Dartmouth College, Boston University, the University of Minnesota, California State University, and many more, as well as partial divestment from the University of Victoria - many of these victories being from the past few months alone!
If it wants to keep up with the commitments of other universities, McGill's own divestment is inevitable. On November 12th , the Collective Day of Action for fossil fuel divestment, we will be hosting a public dance party in James Square in celebration of these wins and the wins that are soon to come, including McGill's. This is also a space to celebrate the tireless organizing by members of the McGill community - both since 2012 and for decades - to push for divestment and a more just university.
Come join us for an evening of music, speeches, and celebration starting at 5pm ET!

This event is taking place on unceded Kanien'kehá:ka territory, known as Tio'tià:ke in Kanien'kéha and Mooniyang in Anishinaabemowin. As organizers at McGill University which exists using land and money stolen from the Kanien'kehá:ka and in particular the Six Nations Trust fund, we must be accomplices to the dismantling of colonial structures and institutions that continue to harm Indigenous life and land.
And as we celebrate Friday evening, we must also celebrate the many years of Indigenous student organizing at McGill that have contributed to making the university a more just and equitable place, as well as land and water protectors defending their livelihoods and territories from colonial entities across Turtle Island!
