The Milton Parc Citizens' Committee invites you on a series of neighbourhood walking tours! We will introduce you to the story of the Milton Parc neighborhood (incorrectly known as the "McGill Ghetto") and its many community initiatives, past and present. In particular, we will highlight the neighborhood's influential tenant movement and share how Milton Parc became the biggest community housing project in Canada, which includes cooperative and non-profit housing and community owned commercial spaces. Additionally, you'll hear more about the community's political organizing and ecology movements, as well as their significant achievements.
At the end of the tour, we'll share ways to get involved in the Milton Parc community! By joining our current projects, you'll help bridge the gap between McGill students and the Milton Parc neighborhood, and help forge meaningful connections!
Volunteer opportunities include:
-mobilizations for the Hotel-Dieu and Royal Victoria Hospitals
-food bank and community kitchen (every Friday afternoon and evening),
-meal distributions to the unhoused community (every Saturday 11am-12pm)
-monthly community picnics (3rd Saturday of every month),
-developing a community cafe-bistro in Bar des Pins
-helping our rooftop garden.
The tour will be led by N.M., a community activist and 6-year resident. There will also be several other guest speakers. These walking tours are co-organized by: the Milton Parc Citizens’ Committee, QPIRG McGill, and the Student Society of McGill University.
Accessibility information:
This tour will be about 1 hour and 15 minutes, with 1 rest stop to sit along the way. It will take place on sidewalks, in parking lots and in parks around the Milton-Parc neighborhood. Some sidewalks will be busy. Snacks and drinks will be provided at the end of the event.
