Marching to the Beat of Three Drums:
Why Are There So Many Mayday Protests in Montreal?
A panel discussion about Mayday being together Joelle from the IWW, Bertrand Guibord from the CSN,
and an anonymous participant in the Clac demo!
Boots have trudged the streets of Montreal on the first of May for over a century. First, to
honour the Haymarket martyrs, and then, as an expression of working class solidarity and
anticapitalist action. For most of the world’s cities, Mayday is a mosaic of contingents in
one large march. But not here. Mayday in Montreal is marked by three different marches: one by
the largest unions in Quebec; one by the IWW; and one by the CLAC; all taking to the streets,
separately.
Montreal has kept this habit, which is almost 20 years old now. The militants who were involved
in the unified march splitting into three aren’t calling the shots anymore, and many new
militants take the state of things for granted.
So, why are there three Mayday demos in Montreal, right now?
Come to the BMP solidarity cooperative for a panel discussion about Mayday with individuals
from the protests involved.
Free event, but any donation is welcome.
