India's Republic Day marks the adoption of the country’s post-colonial Constitution in 1950, with its guarantees of justice, liberty and equality. And on this anniversary, we take the opportunity to shed light on escalating Hindutva ethnonationalism in India which is eviscerating these guarantees. Meanwhile we also want to draw attention to the lesser-known but intensifying links between supporters of this Hindu supremacist ideology and Zionism, in places like Canada, who find common cause in their agendas.
Hindutva, an ideology inspired by European fascism, is espoused by the ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party, the governing political party in India). The Hindutva objective is to transform India from a secular, pluralist entity, into a Hindu nation-state. Under the BJP, atrocities against minorities in India have been carried out with impunity, often with complicity of state authorities. Meanwhile, the extensive network of Hindu nationalists and their affiliates worldwide is well documented, and in Canada this network is involved in a disturbing pattern of propaganda, coercion, organized crime and deadly violence.
Over the past decades, an India and Israel nexus has developed at the expense of the Palestinian people and the many minority groups of India, particularly Muslims. Since the BJP came to power in 2014, the ruling establishments of both countries have signed numerous defense contracts worth billions of dollars. Additionally, Israeli tactics of house demolitions and land encroachment, among others, can be seen in India. India has become a active partner of Israel with exchange of arms and tactics, while here in Canada and in the US, the ties between Hindu Supremacist organizations and Zionist groups are alarmingly growing [1].
Forces of Hindutva fascism have been taking lessons from the Zionist playbook, including pushing the spurious ‘Hinduphobia’ to silence criticism of human rights violations and discrimination against religious and caste minorities in India. The rise of the right in many parts of the world is further emboldening these fascist groups.
In this moment we salute the heroic resistance of the Palestinian people in the face of Israeli genocide in Gaza, occupation and related human-rights abuses and we seek to strengthen movements that jointly challenge both Zionism and Hindutva. Zionists accuse critics of Israel of anti-Semitism as a way to silence them. And Hindutva supporters engage in the same silencing strategy by labelling ‘Hinduphobic’ those who call out the government of India and its Hindutva agenda for the often lethal attacks on minorities. Zionists and Hindutva supporters are increasingly collaborating in joint actions, seeking to widen support for their agendas amongst each other’s constituencies, by claiming victimhood to dupe unsuspecting, uninformed, democracy-loving people into support for genocide and ethnic-cleansing. Our urgent task is to recognize the intense parallels between weaponization of anti-Semitism and Hinduphobia, and unmask these ideologies for what they are.
