Oppressed by governmental restrictions that prevent her human rights, movement and autonomy, an Iranian filmmaker is forced to emigrate “inwards” and finds freedom in recording herself dancing and singing at home as an act of resistance. Using a personal diary-style narrative, Farah Sharifi traces her birth in post-revolution Iran to the Woman, Life, Freedom movement and her precious collection of vintage Super-8 films that capture a fleeting period of freedom in Iran when men and women danced together and enjoyed carefree moments of joy. She blends her found-film archive of the past with footage of the present, which she refers to as “my planet,” to create an alternate history of Iran. When documentary filmmakers are arrested in Iran in 2022, and her own collection of joyful film clips is seized by the police while she is in Germany on an artist residency, she must face the possibility of never returning to Iran. “Sometimes we lose our lives for recording in the battle of memory and forgetting.”

Un panel sur l’imposition de la philanthropie et les formes de contrôle du milieu communautaire

Le gouvernement multiplie les attaques au communautaire. Ce n’est plus suffisant pour le gouvernement d’appauvrir les organismes communautaires autonomes et de maintenir leur sous-financement chronique. Maintenant, il souhaite privatiser le financement avec la philanthropie, l’orienter vers les services individuels et nous éloigner de l’action collective et politique.

Dans sa dérive autoritariste, le gouvernement pond et adopte des projets de loi (PL7, PL103, PL1, PL89, etc.) à une vitesse inquiétante. Tous auront pour effet d’affaiblir l’autonomie des groupes et leur capacité à revendiquer et défendre les droits. Or, l’action communautaire autonome prend justement racine dans le pouvoir des membres et des communautés d’améliorer leur milieu et de revendiquer leurs droits. Cette autonomie n’est pas négociable!

Rendez-vous le 20 janvier pour discuter ensemble de l’imposition de la philanthropie au communautaire et de ses impacts sur le mouvement ainsi que des formes de répression et de contrôle de nos actions politiques.

Join us for the next meeting of the Violet Hour Book Club, a reading group devoted to classic and contemporary works of LGBTQ literature. The book we will be discussing is A Last Supper of Queer Apostles: Selected Essays (2024) by Pedro Lemebel. This month’s meeting in held in collaboration with ACCM (AIDS Community Care Montreal).

Toustes sont invités·es au Violet Hour Book Club, et chacun.e est bienvenu.e à partager ses pensées sur le livre en anglais ou en français.

We will be meeting at Espace des Possibles Petite-Patrie (6450 Avenue Christophe Colomb, Beaubien Metro). L’Espace des Possibles a comme mission d’offrir un lieu d’entraide, d’apprentissages et d’implication dédié à la transition sociale et écologique (la transition socio-écologique).

The space is given to us for free, but VHBC participants are welcome to make voluntary contributions to help support our mandate to create LGBTQ literary events for Montrealers.

Sepideh Farsi, an exiled Iranian filmmaker based in Paris, begins a remote exchange with Fatima Hassouna, a young Palestinian photojournalist. Their only link is through video calls—the fragile thread connecting two worlds. Fatima shares her besieged daily life, her photographs, and her unwavering hope; each network outage triggers panic, while each reconnection brings warmth and relief. From these exchanges, Sepideh Farsi crafts an epistolary documentary that is stunningly poignant—offering a raw, visceral experience of war. The day after Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk was selected for Cannes, Fatima Hassouna was killed, along with her family, in an Israeli airstrike. What remains is this sensitive and harrowing dialogue—a truly essential film, a rare embodiment of cinema in the immediate present.

Nos rides en soutien à la lutte palestinienne continuent cet hiver.

Depuis le cessez-le-feu, plus de 300 palestiniens et palestiniennes ont été tués par Israël. Pendant que l’état génocidaire continue ses crimes en toute impunité avec la complicité du Canada, de nos institutions et entreprises, l’aide humanitaire est également limitée: les palestiniens et les palestiniennes font toujours face aux bombardements, à la famine, aux déplacements, aux maladies, etc.

Exigeons la fin de la complicité du Canada,

Exigeons un embargo bilatéral sur les armes,

Exigeons le boycott, le désinvestissement et la sanction des complices du génocide toujours en cours en Palestine.
