Les Hochelagais.es, logé.es ou non, sont venu.es en nombre pour donner ou pour recevoir du matériel nécessaire pour survivre l'hiver.



Venez samedi prochain, de 13h à 17h, discuter de notre monde commun, manger un repas et boire un chocolat chauds préparés par @les.greniers.agricoles.qc .

Following the success of the kiosk at Morgan Park last December, the Entrave collective (public announcement to follow) has decided to repeat the initiative throughout the winter, on the third Saturday of each month until April.



Hochelaga residents, both homeless and housed, came out in large numbers to give or receive the supplies they need to survive the winter.



Come next Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., to discuss our shared world, enjoy a meal and hot chocolate prepared by @les.greniers.agricoles.qc .

ICE & CBSA

TWO FACES OF THE SAME EVIL

While our comrades in the so-called United States are gaining well-deserved traction for their resistance against ICE, Solidarity Across Borders (SAB) wants to highlight the atrocities committed by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA). 

Violent border control is inherent to genocidal settler colonies like the United States and Canada. While it might be tempting to convince ourselves that Canada is an exception to brutal state-sanctioned violence against migrants, it couldn’t be further from the truth. 

Our very own “made in Canada” Border Services Agency also detains children with their families, arrests people in front of their children, violently barges into their homes at night, injures them during arrests and refuses to provide them with medical care, enters hospitals to detain people and handcuffs them to their bed, and brutalizes them with impunity. Yet the myth of Canadian exceptionalism paints Canada as a tolerant and welcoming country. 

While a lot of outrage has been (deservedly) directed at Garda for collaborating with ICE in US detention centers, it is worth noting that Garda guards have been contracted at the Laval Immigration Holding Center and have oppressed our comrades who were detained for several years now. Garda guards have consistently refused SAB members from bringing essential items such as toothbrushes and shampoo for our comrades on the inside and have proudly exhibited “thin red line” (CBSA’s version of the thin blue line for Blue Lives Matter) pins on their vests. 

It would be hypocritical for us to point at the United States’ cruel treatment of migrants while allowing ourselves to be blinded by the illusion that Canada is somehow better. 

No matter who operates the detention centers and no matter in which country they are located, borders and immigration detention have always been death machines. Garda is just a symptom of the problem; the real problem is that borders exist at all. 

As we mobilize in solidarity with our neighbors, we must not forget resistance here is also crucial. Under the Safe Third Country Agreement, Canada has refused entry to thousands of people and deported thousands more to the countries they fled, despite knowing full well that their lives were endangered. Bill C-12, which is currently in front of the Senate, would only further close the border, so that virtually no one coming from the United States will be able to make a refugee claim. 

It is urgent that we gain an understanding of our own brutal border control regime so that we may mobilize in solidarity with ALL undocumented migrants and migrants with temporary and precarious status in Canada.

DEUX CÔTÉS DU MÊME MAL

Alors que nos camarades aux États-Unis reçoivent une reconnaissance bien méritée pour leur résistance contre l'ICE, Solidarité sans frontières (SSF) souhaite mettre en lumière les atrocités commises par l'Agence des services frontaliers du Canada (ASFC).

Le contrôle violent des frontières est inhérent aux colonies de peuplement génocidaires telles que les États-Unis et le Canada. Même s'il peut être tentant de se convaincre que le Canada fait exception à la brutalité étatique à l'encontre des migrant·es, rien n'est plus loin de la vérité.

Notre propre Agence des services frontaliers « canadien » emprisonne des enfants avec leurs familles, arrête des personnes devant leurs enfants, entre violemment dans leurs maisons pendant la nuit, les blesse lors des arrestations et refuse de leur fournir des soins médicaux, pénètre dans les hôpitaux pour effectuer des arrestations en menottant les migrant·es aux lits et les brutalise en toute impunité. Pourtant, le mythe de l'exceptionnalisme canadien dépeint le Canada comme un pays tolérant et accueillant.

Si Garda est ciblée par l’indignation générale (bien méritée) pour sa collaboration avec l'ICE dans les centres de détention états-uniens, il convient de noter que des gardes de Garda opèrent au Centre de surveillance d’immigration de Laval et oppriment nos camarades détenu·es depuis plusieurs années maintenant. Les gardes de Garda ont systématiquement refusé aux membres de SSF la livraison des articles essentiels tels que des brosses à dents et du shampoing à nos camarades détenu·es et ont fièrement arboré sur leurs gilets des épingles de « thin red line » (la version de l'ASFC de « thin blue line » pour Blue Lives Matter).

Il serait hypocrite de pointer du doigt le traitement cruel réservé aux migrant·es par les États-Unis tout en nous laissant séduire par l'illusion que le Canada lui est moralement supérieur. 

Peu importe qui gère les centres de détention et peu importe dans quel pays ils se trouvent, les frontières et le système de détention migratoire ont toujours été meurtriers. Garda n'est qu'un symptôme du problème ; le vrai problème, c'est l'existence même des frontières.

Tandis que nous nous mobilisons en solidarité avec nos voisins, nous ne devons pas oublier que la résistance ici est également cruciale. En vertu de l'Accord sur les tiers pays sûrs, le Canada a refusé l'entrée à des milliers de personnes et a expulsé des milliers d'autres vers les pays qu'elles avaient fui, tout en sachant pertinemment que leur vie était en danger. Le projet de loi C-12, actuellement devant le Sénat, ne fera que fermer davantage la frontière, de sorte que pratiquement personne venant des États-Unis ne pourra présenter une demande d'asile. 

Il est urgent que nous comprenions notre propre régime brutal de contrôle des frontières afin de pouvoir nous mobiliser en solidarité avec TOUS·TES les migrant·es sans statut et les migrant·es ayant un statut temporaire et précaire au Canada.

Registration is open for our next February workshop, Stealing from Mom’s Purse, facilitated by Gwen Aube! 

Stealing From Mom’s Purse is a writing workshop focused on viewing queer creation within greater lineages of queer artists & seeing our work as worthy of existing in communication with those before us. Through lecture, group discussion, and a writing exercise, we will explore our influences and their place in our work. If great artists steal, how do we steal successfully? What is a mentor, and how do we find them? How can our work speak to the archive?

Attendees are encouraged to bring a poem or something else they wish to “steal from” or “respond to” for our writing exercise, though books from the library will also be available to explore and borrow. After the workshop, attendees’ work will be compiled into a limited-run zine for attendees and for inclusion in Dick’s collection.

She lives in Montreal.
